solution proposed Firefox 3 and Gmail PROBLEM: Unstoppable memory leak,100% CPU usage, crash!

Firefox version: 3.0 Operating system: Windows XP Pro (SP 2)

After upgrading to the official (i.e. NOT beta or RC version) of Firefox 3.0, Firefox starts using 100% of CPU and its Memory Usage starts increasing rapidly and without end whenever I am signed in to Gmail. I think it particularly happens at the point I try to sign out from Gmail. I have to then force Firefox 3.0 to close (from the task manager) because it is consuming all the CPU and RAM and the computer virtually freezes.

I am using Windows XP Pro (service Pack 2).

Extensions installed:

Cooliris Previews
Foxmarks
Greasemonkey
IE View Lite
Scribefire
Zotero

Some others... Too scared to reopen Firefox for the moment...

Disabled GChat. And problem solved.

Thanks for the excellent tip, Roberto! :)

firefox 3.0.1 + ubuntu 8.04.1 => same here! :(

Same problem, FireFox 3.0, GChat, and GCalender-Outlook Sync, Vista.
I just turned off GChat, still see memory leak.

Good news to me. I've solved the memory leak. VistaSp1+FireFox3.03 didn't give me this problem three days ago.

After I tried couple setup of Gmail/GChat/GCalender without any improvement, I switched to FireFox SafeMode and opened several folders in two FireFox. No memory drain. I switched back to FireFox normal mode, the problem is gone. Lucky me. I am not sure if the problem is gone for good. At least, I watch the FireFox having relatively stable memory usage for about an hour.

Wish you luck.

Anyone found the official solution for this?
Did anyone report this bug to mozilla??

Hello, I found this thread through Google. I am using ie and
I am having the same issues. Turning off chat didn't help. The only way I can access gmail in a timely fashion is by using the basic html version for slower connection. This happens only on my desktop. gmail on my laptop works fine. I have disabled many add on's but with no luck so far.

I believe this problem is caused by Gmail, not Firefox.

I have experienced the problem, but only with one Debian Linux desktop. All the rest of the computers I use — Debian, Ubuntu, windoze, etc., including the ones I use at work (I work in a datacenter.... that's quite a few) — don't seem to have any issue running Gmail with the terminal skin and two or three chats at a time, often for an entire 8-10 hour shift.

One thing that seems to improve the way Gmail plays with other applications is using the older version. You can either click the link near the top of the page, or append "?ui=1" to the url.

Same issue here.

Same thing here on OSX 10.4.11 and FF 3.5

As soon as I switched to the 'Older Version' of GMAIL, the CPU went down to 1% usage (from 90-100%). I thought I had a browser hijack!

Same problem here!! Is there anything a can do to stop this problem?

same problem - it just started when I changed to FF 3 - also can't use the Norton tools

problem is somewhere in greasemonkey add-on. disable it and things work fine.

except for the fact that I don't have greasemonkey. :p

once you log in to you account switch to "older version" of gmail. You have to do it every time you log in though :(

I had the same problem, but I'm running Ubuntu Linux and FireFox. Turning off Gmail chat as Roberto suggested fixed the problem for me.

Hi, I've had the same problem with Yahoo! Email Classic. It happens frequently when I try to check mail or go to the previous or next message, or go back to the inbox, etc. Usually, the cpu usage is normal, but Firefox quickly uses up all the memory on the machine.

I've had this problem on several machines, all running Windows XP, and with various versions of Firefox, all numbered 3.0 or higher. The problem still exists with 3.5.3.

I originally though the problem was with Yahoo!. But if the problem also exists with gmail, then it seems likely that it is a Firefox problem.

I've got problems using gmail and even searching on google. After updating to version 3.5.3 gmail and google are not working well. Sometimes the browser crashes for no apparent reason. When using gmail, the simply fact of changing to spam folder to wipe the messages out it simply doesn't work just an indication on gmail Loading and after some time still working... I haven't tried another browser yet. I'll post after doing it...

I have the same problems, but on both FF 3.5.5 and IE. As soon as I start gmail, my CPU goes crazy 100%, even if the chat is blocked by the network admins.

Sorry, I provided wrong FF version number. I wanted to say 3.5.3 instead of 3.5.5.
