It has been proven there is definitely something wrong with the startup of Firefox 3.5 as it is too slow. Bugs have been filed and a fix is in the works. I'm also trying to get a test build with the problem backed out to see if it loads fast for you guys again. So please no more threads about the issue and stay tuned to this thread for updates on the issue.

Currently, the workaround that helps a lot of people is to clear your Internet Explorer temporary internet files & Temp folder files. It may or not help you but its worth a shot.

XP/Vista Users:

Clearing Temporary internet files cache:
IE 6: Clearing cache

Internet Explorer 7: How to Clear Your Cache

IE 8
When you clear your settings in IE8 do the following:-
1. Select menu Tools->Internet Options
2. Click the "Delete Files..." button
3. Make sure you do NOT tick the first box - this is the bit we actually NEED to clear!

Thanks to James for this one!

To clear Temp folder:

Start button > Run... > put: %temp% > hit OK button. Erase what's in that folder.

Clear Recent Documents:

XP:
Right click Start button > Properties, choose to "Customize" Start Menu, click the "Advanced" tab and then click the "Clear List" button at the bottom of the Customize Start Menu box.

Vista:

Vista Users:

Vista user's Disk Cleanup:
Delete files using Vista Disk Cleanup / Video for Vista Disk Cleanup

Double check files were erased:
On vista, using start search box:

Type:
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\

Extra info:
Before anyone with this problem erases their files, could they try to see how many files are in their IE cache & Temp folder & post the number here? Thanks!

Other areas to check:
Recycle Bin

XP:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\History
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
%userprofile%\My Recent Documents

Vista:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History

If slowdown returns:
Windows let's the user control the maximum amount of disk space used for the "Temporary Internet Files". The default setting is very big. Setting it down to say 100MB or 200MB should REALLY help reduce the number of files to be scanned.

To adjust that, go to Control Panel > Network & Internet Connections > Internet Options > General Tab. Also it's ok if you don't have Network & Internet Connections, continue to Internet Options.

Under the Temporary Internet Files heading, click the "Settings" button.

Change the number under "Amount of disk space to use" to 100 or 200.
Click OK.

Then, back in the Internet Options, General tab, under the
Temporary Internet Files heading, click the "Delete Files" button.
Put a check in the box that says "Delete all offline content". Click OK.
Click OK to dismiss the Internet Options panel.

Programs reported to make Firefox slow:
Comodo Internet Security suite
F-secure

Thanks, Noah, but we're seeing it on Mac OS X as well. (No IE. :)

No prob, Rob. Ouch, I did forget a mac user reported this. Hmm, gonna see what I can dig up.

I'm also experiencing the same problem.
Clearing the IE cache doesn't seem to be effective.
On my desktop pc, there is barely a problem on startup.
But on the laptop it freezes, it never happened in lower versions.

There is already a youtube video showing the problem:

Thanks Peter. That vid was nice (nice music too :D), though I love how he says that site this "won't help you". :P

If I could immediately fix it, I would. Otherwise all I can do is be this forum's soapbox and try to keep pestering the devs to look at all the threads on the issue and for them to file bugs on them. Which they did. Now I'm trying to get a build of Firefox with the offending code removed, but I couldn't find anyone to do it yet. When I get it, I was hoping to post it here, so people could test it & report any difference.

And I'll ask for a mac version before I forget yet again. ;)

I can confirm I have the same problem of extremely slow start-up (may be a minute or more) of FireFox 3.5. I am using Windows 7 RC.

Thanks for the info Noah - FF 3.5 was taking an age (2 mins or so) to start-up (with little or no processor load, but the hdd light flashing away). Followed your advice and cleared out the IE cache (16,000 files) and now start-up is almost instant.

my firefox is cutting off all the time im on my site can you tell me if this is to do with firefox or not ?

Noah,

I have 4700 Internet Temp files. After I erased them, I can see a bit of difference in FF 3.5 start-up. It does seem faster. I have tried to restart it four times and each time it started almost instantly. Before that, it took almost a minute.

I also experience the same thing and it was caused by large number of directories in my (Users)\AppData\Local\Temp. Most of the directories are from Windows Explorer ZIP file browser. Firefox is doing Listing Directory for each folder. I can show you the process trace file if needed.

So for those that have this issue on Windows XP or Vista, remove the zip temp file directories and Firefox should load faster.

same problem here - at least 40 secs of loading @ my asus Notebook (intel centrino 1,86 ghz/ 1 gb ram / xp home edition SP3). emptying the ie cache didnt help.

hope this issue will be solved soon. thx 4 ur support,

Daniel

I am experiencing this problem as well. Yesterday I updated Firefox 3.0.x to 3.5. My installation of 3.0 would typically take about 5-10 seconds to launch after a reboot, and 2-3 seconds to launch after it had already been running. After I updated to 3.5, it takes 75-80 seconds to launch after a reboot, and 5-10 seconds to launch after it has already been running.

I just spoke with a contributor in the live support chat, who suggested that I clear the browser cache and clear the Windows temp folder. I did this, rebooted, launched Firefox 3.5, and it now takes about 70-73 seconds to launch. An improvement, yes, but still really bad.

My system:

Athlon XP 2900+, 2GB RAM, XP SP2

Correction to my earlier post. Browsing ZIP file & opening the content directly from Explorer is supported on Windows 2003 and Vista but not XP.

To remove these temp ZIP folders or clean up your user temp folder, you can do Start-Run: explorer %Temp%

Sorry if this is inappropriate. We had the 3.5 slowdown in loading. We cleared IE8, clearing everything and the slow down seemed to end immediately. On the administrative account (that we don't use except to install stuff) no slowdown occurred at all. On the user account the slowdown occurred and then disappeared after cleaning IE8, did not check how many files before cleaning, sorry.

A suggestion in another thread recommends an application called Firefox Preloader which you can download from here: Firefox Preloader

The relevant thread is here: Firefox takes a long time to load

thanks for the other advice.
Problem is re-occurring. Last night took several minutes to load, after clearing ie8 it loaded instantly. Today it is now taking 15 second to load even after clearing ie8. This is occurring on one machine, no problem so far on another

Firefox 3.5 was taking up to ~10 seconds to load, sometimes longer, so I tried disabling add-ins one at a time. Disabling Adblock restored the zippy load time. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Thom

Herb, can you please check how many files are in the temporary internet files before you clear if you run into the slowdown again? Thanks.

Noah. Glad to see (belatedly) some sign that Mozilla is working on this, but you appear to have two related but different problems: one is that it 3.5 apparently takes a long time to load on some machines, and the other (my problem) is that it will not load at all. Ever. (I let it sit for eight hours while I went to sleep last night, so I mean, ever.)

My two other computers got it running, but not the one that is my main one.

Ed, trust me I wouldn't shutup about this one. The reports are UNDENIABLE. So I just kept bringing it up. Other people were instrumental too in finding the key causes of this.

Ed, can you confirm that after trying load Firefox on the computer that will never load it, that it actually is running when do CTRL+ALT+DEL & look under the Processes tab, that you see firefox.exe there? And if you do, what is the CPU usage of it and the amount of memory it is using?

And is that computer 2k, XP, or Vista?
