Iave seen mutiple questions about this. I can't seem to figure out how to fix it however. When I open FF it ALWAYS opens my selected home page with no trouble. But I am getting Server Not Found about 80% of the time after that. I have tried about everything suggested. I have no Security programs. I have turned Windoze Firewall off. Tried deleting temp files. IE works fine. My laptop on the wireless works fine.

- right click in your about:config

Not sure where to do this. If I type in about:config in the address line I get to a whole list of things. I suspect you want me to add
network.dns.disablePrefetch to the list and toggle it to true. But I am stuck on how to do that.

David Mc

When you get into about:config, copy this: network.dns.disablePrefetch
and paste it into the "Filter:" field at the top.

The value column on that line will be "False"

You can then right-click on the line network.dns.disablePrefetch and choose "Toggle". NOTE: a double-click on the network.dns.disablePrefetch line will accomplish the same thing.

The value column will now be "True"

Close the tab in which you opened about:config. The change is immediate.

Post back here if this does not resolve your problem.

David Mc

Sorry, got it backwards; should be

The value column on that line will be "True"

You can then right-click on the line network.dns.disablePrefetch and choose "Toggle". NOTE: a double-click on the network.dns.disablePrefetch line will accomplish the same thing.

The value column will now be "False"

Okay, I paste network.dns.disableprefetch onto the Filter line and then I see nothing to click to enter it onto the list. When I type in the above the list disappears and only the Filter entry is there.

You will need to add the preference item:

  1. highlight and copy the following to your clipboard: network.dns.disableprefetch
  2. go into about:config
  3. paste what you just copied into the "Filter:" area
  4. you should have a blank screen, as before
  5. right-click in the blank area below the the column "Preference Name"
  6. choose "New" and then "Boolean"
  7. right-click in the blank space under "Enter the preference name" and choose paste
  8. that will put network.dns.disableprefetch in the blank space
  9. click OK
  10. choose false and click OK

The line should show in the four columns (in bold) (underlines shown here only for column identification, will not be underlined on the about:config screen):

network.dns.disablePrefetch user set boolean true

NOTE that it should say "true". I was incorrect in my 2nd post at 18:13 yesterday and correct in my first post at 18:10 yesterday. Sorry, I was just getting too tired then.

Close the about:config tab. The change is immediate.

Post back and let me know if this solves your problem.

Sorry, getting to tired.

In the above item 10 should read: choose true and click OK

I think this will be my last post today.

Thank you. It appears that all is well in brouserville. Thanks for the concise instructions for yet another place in the computer I have never been before.

I take your comments as meaning that you are not getting the "Server Not Found" notice after making the "preFetch" change.

I am happy that this helped. Thank you for your patience with all my mis-statements and corrections to the instructions.

Server Not Found still pops up occasionally, but not near as often as it was. I also set the Temp Internet File to 100 and have cleared that. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Temp Internet File?

Sorry, Offline Storage in Advance Tab of Options. I was trying everything I could. Anything else I should be looking at?

You could have a look at the following; specifically items 1.1, 2 and 3 in the "Contents".

If you are having problems with any applications other than Firefox, you may need to look at 1.2 in the "Contents".

Oops! You need the link on that:

"Contents" as under Options? I don't see any reference numbers as noted in your last message.

No, click on the link below, then

I'm getting the same 'server not found' message sometimes, will this have any affect in Windows XP too or is it just for Vista?.
