Firefox 3 is supposed to ask if you want to save the tabs for the next session. I think I might have said to not ask me again, but I want the dialog to appear again. How do I do that?

Extensions installed:

DownThemAll and Download Statusbar

Plugins installed:

I would like to be able to save the tabs when I close, but it no does not ask me.

Bo
  1. Enter about:config in the Location bar
  2. Type browser.sessionstore.enabled in the "Filter"
  3. Make sure the browser.sessionstore.enabled preference is true.

Repeat for:

  • browser.warnOnQuit - true
  • browser.warnOnRestart - true
  • browser.startup.page - 1 or 2

Edited: cor-el is right, see below

Good lucK!

Having the same issue, when I quit it's not asking if I want to save tabs or just quit. I checked and all of those things seem to be enabled but its still not asking.

why oh why did I tick that box?!

Firefox 3 will only ask that if browser.startup.page is not 3, because otherwise your pages will already be reopened ("Show my windows and tabs from last time").

Same for me, checked the settings and they all seem ok. It was working originally but it has now stopped.

Oops, I just read this http://teck.in/firefox-save-tabs-on-exit.html and changed the "When firefox starts" startup option and, although it still does not prompt me, it does automatically save and restore my tabs.

However warnOnQuit and warnOnRestart are both true but I still don't get a prompt on exit.

A way do that is to have another window open and that can be the bookmarks manager or the download manager. Then Firefox will ask you.

Ok, I had a similar issue. I went through all the suggestions mentioned above to no avail. Finally, I found that I had a user.js in the profile directory and user.js had just one line in it. That line was user_pref("advanced.system.supportDDEExec", false);.
Not sure why, but getting rid of the whole user.js file made the tab save feature work beautifully.

I got the same problem... I don't know how come the prompt on exit (save and quit; quit; cancel) has been disabled and I couldn't get it back. I wanted to restart the computer so I thought by clicking Close button, FF will automatically ask if I want to save the sessions, but it didn't so I had to open abt 10 tabs manually:(. I've tried all the above solutions but none works. I believe there will be more ppl ask this questions. Can anyone provide a workable answer?

Does anyone know how to set the default action for the Quit Firefox dialog box to "Quit" instead of "Save and Quit"? Most of the time I don't want to save the sessions for the next time, so I just want to be able to hit Enter, instead of using another mouse or keystroke.

I cannot get the "Save and Quit" dialog box to show up again. I've tried all suggestions, nothing works. My only choices are a warning box that I'm closing multiple tabs or the option to save all tabs every time I close (without a warning box). Sometimes I want to save my tabs, sometimes I don't. I need the option to choose those times. What happened, everything was working great up until a couple days ago...

This is frustrating beyond words. Firefox 3 is still a beta with bugs and they don't seem to be listening to us. Tried everything and still can't get it to save all the tabs or give me the option to do so. At some point it just stopped doing it. I've lost so much time with this it's not worth it. Going back to Opera where this has always worked fine for many years.

Just upgraded to version 3 and everything's gone wrong already - i've lost all my previous history and then after trailing though ie7's history to find some remenants of past pages and copying the urls into FF, I find that it now also won't save any tabs no matter what I try. I've had to relead 24 tabs five times now and frankly fed up to high heaven. I've tried what Moby did but I don't even have a js file anywhere in my porfiles folder! Is that the problem? If FF don't make an update soon, I'm sticking to IE for good.

OK, I reinstalled FF with no better luck but looked again in the profiles folder (C:\Users\%name%\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\rhgo8bmp.default in vista) and found and deleted a file called prefs.js. On start, FF rewrote this settings file and the save tabs then worked like a charm. Hope this helps.

Also, with the "Library" window (history>show all history ctrl+shift+h). If you have that open when you close the main FF window, it won't save your tabs. Cheers.

I somehow magically got it to work. Make sure that in the Tabs tab in the Firefox preferences/options that you have it warn you when you're closing with multiple tabs. You need to have that in order for it to work. Try the above suggestions and hopefully it'll work. If not, try just deleting your preferences, hopefully you won't have hacked your FF too much already.

By closing the download window, it works (asked me if I want to Save and Exit). Make sure that all other Firefox windows are closed. Including the downloads window.

how do i "save and quite" when it's time to close the window? don't need to be asked. i do i do "it". is there a hot key sequence? fire fox please help.

Just Make Sure that you are not Opening any other Window of Fire Fox.

i mean if you have one window of Firefox opened with 1,2,3,4,5, ...etc. Tabs

and you have also another window of Firefox opened with/without tabs in it

you have to close one of the window and then the save and quit box will return again :)

yeah the inability to save tabs in two windows... it sucks!
any workarounds?

cheers!
