Hi folks: Been trying out the new FF3rc1, and just noticed that somehow it's found OLD bookmarks. FF2.x still uses the newer bookmarks. What can I do to correct this?

Extensions installed:

Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.1.3
Adblock Plus .7.5.4
Copy plain text .3.3
DOM Inspector 1.8.1.14
Download statusbar .9.6.1
Fasterfox 2.0.0
Google toolbar for Firefox 3.0.20070525W
Locationbar2 0.9.1
Menau editor 1.2.6
Noscript 1.6.5
Orbit download firefox intergration 2.02
Safehistory .8
Sage 1.3.10
Scrapbook 1.3.3.3.
Talkback 2.0.0.11

(Wouldn't it be nice if FF3, had a copy/paste feature for this?

You can export the bookmarks FF2 is using
In FF2:

  1. Click Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks... to open the Bookmarks window
  2. In the Bookmarks window, click File > Export...
  3. Save the file somewhere

In FF3:

  1. Click Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks... to open the Library window
  2. In the Library window, click "Import and Backup" and choose "Import HTML."
  3. Load the file you saved.

Then use the Library to delete duplicates.

What probably happened is that somewhere along the line, a new profile was created when you were using FF2. FF3 imported from that. You can launch the Profile manager to see if you have multiple profiles.

Good luck!

Are you using the same profile folder for Firefox 2 and 3? If you are then that is not recommended and may lead to problems. If you are using the same profile then for example, if you make changes to bookmarks in Firefox 2 those changes will not show up in Firefox 3 since the 2 versions use different files to store bookmarks.

If you used that profile before with a Firefox 3 version then there may be an old places.sqlite file that was used automatically.
If you did that then it is better to create a new profile.

This is because you've used a Firefox 3 pre-release in the past, and the migration step only happens once. Ideally, Firefox would notice this and remigrate things, but it doesn't.

Using the same profile folder for 2 and 3 may not be recommended, but I've never had any problems with it, apart from this one.

Don't export and import - you'll end up with a load of duplicates. And you don't need to create a new profile either - that would ignore all of your data completely. Instead, find your profile folder (instructions on MozillaZine somewhere, or perhaps on this site too) and delete (or move somewhere else, just to be safe) any file ending in ".sqlite" in the root directory. This will cause Firefox to redo the migration, giving you a copy of all your new bookmarks, history, saved form info, etc. etc.

This worked for me, at any rate.
