normal Not recognising PDF files with xxx.xxx filenames in 3.0b4 on OS X

Firefox version: 3.0b4 Operating system: Intel Mac OS X 10.5

If I click on a pdf file with a name such as

0803.1234

then Firefix 3.0b4 (OS X) does not recognise it as a PDF file. Seems it is seeing the .1234 extension and overruling the mime type? I checked with Safari and it has no problem recognising the file.

This happens with many recent PDFs at

http://arxiv.org/

where their filenaming scheme is as above.

This affects both directly viewing or saving.

Firefox depends on the server sending an appropriate content-type header specifying that it is a PDF. That should override the file extension. A site such as Rex Swain's HTTP Viewer can display the headers if you copy the URL and test it there. For such a big file, make sure to only retrieve the HEAD information, and not the entire file (i.e., not GET).

I am also experiencing this problem at arxiv.org. Usefully, there is a mirror site running a different server which doesn't have this issue.

Below I have pasted the HTTP viewer data for two links, which should deliver an identical PDF file.

First for
http://arxiv.org/pdf/0709.1729
which doesn't save the pdf extension correctly (but works ok in Firefox 2 and in Safari).

The for
http://aps.arxiv.org/pdf/0709.1729
Which works fine in Firefox 3b04.

Hopefully this will help you identify the problem.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi.

Facing the same problem, and using arXiv a lot, I contacted the arXiv people, who very kindly seem to have fixed the problem also for the main site (at least, now it works on my Firefox 3). Many thanks to them for their excellent service.
