[Due to a temporary bug in the Contributors forum, old threads are not visible in the thread list, so I'm starting a new thread.]

In a previous thread, I started gathering feedback and ideas for a new and improved knowledge base article editor. I've taken the feedback we have received and created two XHTML mockups.

Some information not in the mockups

The "Insert Image" toolbar button will pop up a prompt for:

  • Image uploader (mandatory)
  • Image height
  • Image width
  • Alignment

The "SHOWFOR" button will trigger a drop-down, that includes

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux
  • Windows and Mac
  • Windows and Linux
  • Mac and Linux

  • Firefox 3.1
  • Firefox 3.0
  • Firefox 3.0 and 3.1
  • Firefox 2

(when Fx2 support ceases, we should remove the last two)

The "Dynamic content" button will trigger a dropdown that includes all content labels for the language assigned to the article.

About the Summarize your edit and cite a reference field.

Currently , there's a limit to the amount of text that appears in the article History but the field will accept any amount of text. If you enter too much, the last part of what you've typed will be missing when it's posted to the article History. You shouldn't be allowed to continue typing into this field once you have run out of room. Has this been fixed?

I already posted this suggestion in the SUMO blog: personally I find more comfortable to download the whole article source and then translate it offline.

This I obtain with the trivial copy/paste. ;)

Then, I paste the translated article in the editor, get the preview and make the last (hopefully) corrections online.

I think one useful feature might be a "download source" button.

Alice; have you filed a bug?

Hi Chris,

As far as I know, all Italian translators do download the source and translate offline. Personally I find far easier than translating straightly into the editor.

I think a Wysiwyg editor in a wiki is something fundamentally flawed. That's what they have done with MDC and it's horrible to use. Whatever you want to do, you always end up having to switch to "source" mode. With features such as "ShowFor", it will be the same here.

Since a Wysiwyg editor doesn't produce code as clean as an human would, it makes it much harder to contribute instead of easier. I don't think it's a matter of making it right or not. The folks at Deki obviously have put a lot of tought and work on it, it just doesn't work as well as a "classic" wiki.
