solution proposed Opening Firefox 3 (final) downloads a growlRegDict file

Every time I open Firefox 3, an alert dialog opens (Mac OS 10.5.x) as Firefox loads, saying:

Firefox-0A6926A0-3ED6-4933-AF5A-1FEB837C57BA-245-000009FC2D7A1D5D.growlRegDict” may be an application. It was downloaded from the Internet and will be opened by GrowlHelperApp. Are you sure you want to open it?

At the bottom of the dialog is a timestamp, showing that Firefox is downloading a new growlRegDict each time it opens.

I've updated to Growl 1.1.4. I've removed Firefox from the list of applications to which Growl "listens." In fact, Growl isn't even running. Still, I get this stubborn PITA. Any ideas?

Hmmm... Try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox to see if that helps... See Uninstalling Firefox.

Good luck!

Bo:

I downloaded Firefox 3 again.
I backed up my profile, then deleted it (~/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/), but left the rest of the Firefox support files.
I deleted the installed copy of Firefox 3.
I reinstalled Firefox 3.
I opened Firefox 3...
and got an error message saying that only one copy of Firefox could run at a time, leaving me one option: quit.
I opened Activity Monitor, but found no current processes for Firefox.
I tried opening Firefox again, with the same result.
I ran the UNIX maintenance scripts, deleted caches, rotated logs, and repaired disk permissions (using Cocktail).
I tried opening Firefox again, but still got the error message about concurrent sessions.
I copied my Firefox user profile back to its correct location.
Firefox opened, but again wanted to download a growlRegDict file.

Perhaps, if I had deleted the entire ~/Application Support/Firefox/ directory, I could have avoided the multiple-session issue. Maybe. But Firefox *still* wants to download a growlRegDict file every time I open the browser.

The only current solution would be to remove Growl, which is unacceptable. The other solution would be for Mozilla to correct this bug.

maybe its a power pc bug... i am have the exact same problem

I am running on Intel and I am experiencing the same issue.

I have the same Problem Intel

can anybody help ?

I've had the same problem, but for me this site did the trick: http://groups.google.com/group/growldiscuss/browse_thread/thread/ac2e4e6bde0f6c1a

In essence:

  • Download and install the Growl Registration Dictionary Editor (from here)
  • Browse to /private/var/folders/s5/..../-Tmp-/ (i.e. the folder where the .growlRegDict files are)
  • Use finder's Info Panel to change the default application for ".growlRegDict" files to Growl Registration Dictionary Edit

So, I hope, this'll work it for you either. And FYI: the .growlRegDict file isn't acutally downloaded from the internet each time you launch Firefox, it is only created every time!

Good luck ;)

I have a Dual 2.5 Ghz PowerPC G5 and am experiencing the same problem. I have tried reinstalling firefox... and I have the same result. I attached an screenshot.

I too am trying to solve this problem. I have downloaded the Growl Registration Dictionary Editor, and I am having trouble with step 2? Where and how do I find the /private/var/folders/s5/...folder?
thanks

Can somebody please tell us where we can find the /private/var/folders/s5/...folder in Snow Leopard?

thanks

Found the Solution, i needed to show my hidden folders.

How to show hidden folders:
open terminal and input commando ->

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

killall Finder

To hide the hidden files again, replace TRUE by FALSE

Sorry i mean TRUE to show them and FALSE to hide them again

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

killall Finder
