I have exactly the same problem raised here but have not got an answer that solves it yet.

My problem is very similar to Murray's: I have exactly the same version and user agent of FF (except mine is in Finnish) and I use XP. I have Chatzilla and Adblock 1.1.1 as extensions.

I updated to FF 3.5.4 and AVG 9.0 recently. I am not sure whether the AVG update is relevant, though.

Firefox is very slow and often doesn't answer if I try to do anything (e.g. minimise the window) while it is loading a page. It takes especially long for FF to start up, extra tabs are somewhat better. Indeed my whole computer is slower than usual whenever FF is running. I have cleared all caches etc with CCleaner and done a defrag lately, but that's been of no help. I have also run a full virus scan, which found nothing.

Glad to hear it's not just me!

I disabled Surf-Shield from the AVG 9.0 toolbar and that's made all the difference. Firefox is back up to speed. I don't have whatever protection Surf Shield's supposed to offer, but oh well.

I don't have AVG toolbar and I never bothered to install surf-shield or link scanner (because afaik their main function is to slow everything down), so while I'm glad your FF is quicker, Murray, I'm slightly disappointed your solution won't work for me! :)

Thanks, Murray, that solved my problem as well. Though I have the AVG toolbar disabled I found the option under the AVG link scanner component to disable active surf-shield and things are back to normal again.

Agreed. :o)

Disabling the safe shield has put browser back to normal speed.

I had the exact same problem with having to stop pages from loading, then reloading them in order to get the page to show properly.

I think I will be removing AVG as it has been slowly getting worse for a while now - the obtrusive "UPGRADE TO VERSION X NOW TO STAY PROTECTED!" message at the bottom of the program, to the annoying link scanners and safe search which I have not been able to remove (you can disable them, but the the AVG control centre reports an error).
Will be looking at Avast for my virus protection now I think.

Same problem with FF 3.5.4. I temporarily disabled AVG 9, rebooted WinXP Pro SP3 and it made no difference to the page loading time. So I believe it's not related to AVG 9. I think Google has made some changes to its News page.

Thanks Murray! Thus endeth two exasperating days.

i had same problem of slow and sluggish page loading and surfing after updating to avg free 9.0.disabled the surf sheild as mr murrey suggested and hey presto it solved the problem

yup very latest AVG 9.0.704 Link Scanner slows browsing almost to a halt.

I also suspect AVG of causing timeouts in Outlook POP3 mail downloads

If you feel (as I do) that AVG 9's Link Scanner or other features slow down your browsing, you can disable all except the anti-virus, the anti-spyware, the license info, and the automatic updating features by doing the following:

Click on Start > My Computer > Local Disk C: then double-click on Program Files > AVG > AVG9.

In the list, find avgchsvx.exe and rename it (by selecting the file name and pressing the F2 key on the keyboard) to avgchsvx.ex_ (in other words, change the final "e" to an underscore "_" character. Ignore the "dire" warning and click OK to rename the file.

In the list, find avgcsrvx.exe , avgrsx.exe , and avgsnx.exe (Note: the last one may or may not be present) and rename each using the underscore character in place of the final "e".

Next, open the AVG user interface by double-clicking on the tray icon. Right-click on each of the services (but not the Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, License, and Update Manager) and put a check mark at the left of "Ignore the state of this component".

Next, click on Tools > Advanced Settings and in each of the unwanted items, uncheck all options so as to disable them.

Finally, click on Ignore Faulty Conditions and put a check mark at the left of all items except Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, License and Update Manager.

Click OK, reboot your machine, and you're done.

Try disabling adblock on page which causes problem (in context menu for adblock icon).

Jack,

OK, I've done as you suggested. Thank you, the page seems to load faster now. However, many other ordinary pages still have the slow loading problem. Here's one example: http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSN1346294620091113 . After over 10 minutes it has not finish loading.
When I check the blockable items on the page I see http://static.reuters.com/resources/js/articlePartnerAttribution.js in the status bar.
What is this "static" thing, which seems to account for much of the delay?

Frank

Today, 11/13/09, as of ~8 PM Eastern Time, the problem seems to be gone, at least for me. I no longer get those "Loading...", "Transferring...", messages in the status bar, and the whirling circle figure no longer appears on the new tab. Pages load normally! What happened? Darndifino!

Anybody else have a similar experience?

Frank D

I downloaded AVG 9 yesterday and immediately started having problems with pages not loading. Disabling Surf Shield fixed the problem immediately.

Thank you, Murray.
