I have another kind of problem with Firefox

Description

Since updating to Firefox 3.5.4, none of my extensions or themes work. I default to the default Firefox them and when I try to change options on my extensions, the screen freezes and I am unable to do anything in the Add-ons window without manually stopping Firefox from the Task Manager screen. This is a stability update? NOT!!! This problem exists both on my home and office computers, so I know it is not just a fluke with one of my machines, but a problem with the Firefox update itself. I'd appreciate any help anyone can supply. Thanks in advance.

I had exactly the same problem, found this solution and it worked:

Reset the Extension Manager.

With Firefox closed, delete the following files in your profile folder:

extensions.cache
extensions.ini
extensions.rdf
and
compatibility.ini

Hope it works for you too.

Sorry, but nothing changed. Extensions.cache was not there to begin with, but after deleting the other files and restarting Firefox, the same problem continued. Am I doing something wrong?

Don't know is the short answer. I'm not a techie, just searching for a solution the same as you. I just went through documents and settings to my profile folder, then application data, mozilla, and profiles and deleted the files. extensions.cache was difficult to find, but just deleted the files, re-started firefox and everything came back. Just thought I'd pass my findings to see if helped you. If it doesn't, then sorry not much else I can recommend except keep searching the forum for something which works for you.

The only other things I did was to uninstall firefox, run a registry cleaner then re-install firefox and start again.

Thanks, really, for the suggestions. It was my understanding that restarting Firefox should somehow cause Firefox to make new copies of the files I deleted, minus the one I could not find--
extensions.cache
extensions.ini
extensions.rdf
and
compatibility.ini--
but when I checked right now I found that none of those files has "returned." Hmmm. I deleted them from the directory xxxxxxxxx.default, and not xxxxxxxxx.Default User. Was that the correct directory? Anyhow, I understand you were just passing along information, and I really appreciate that.

That's ok. The path to files I deleted was:

documents and settings/Bill/application data/mozilla/firefox/profiles/kxw79oim.default

Well, glad to hear I at least was in the correct directory. Well, last night I was finally able to get System Restore to work (by using it from Safe Mode) and got to a point before the problems started with Firefox re themes and extensions. But, for some reason, Firefox is unable to connect to the internet (though Internet Explorer has no problem!) AND Norton Internet Security refuses to load either automatically or manually, nor can I uninstall NIS to reinstall it yet (this all went down at about 3:00 a.m. last night), but I still have a few ways to try that. The long and the short of it is my system is slightly fxxxxd. Well, at least the problems are changing...however, I refuse to do the same to my office machine (still no themes or extension) and will probably try your workaround here AFTER backing up all files this time).
