If it is the list of 10 search suggestions in the Suggestions drop-down below the search bar (not the location/address/url bar), you can turn that off by editing your profile.
In the location/address/url bar type about:config and press Enter, accept the warning message, in Field type browser.search.suggest.enabled, there should be one item listed below the Field area, right-click on it, choose Toggle, the Value column should now be "false", close the about:config tab, restart Firefox (File/Restart). Test.
ts, tried that but it still fails, screen shot attached, appreciate your help
Here is how to attach a screenshot. The screenshot must be a file on your hard drive.

Like the attached screenshot?
If yes, the instructions I gave you earlier to make a change in your preferences does work to get rid of that drop down. I have tested it on my system.
Go back, see if the change in your preferences stayed set to "false".
If you have not closed Firefox since making the change, close and restart Firefox (File > Restart) and see if the change is working.
Post back and let me know your results.
For the Google website you can set your preferences on the Google Search settings page: Query Suggestions : Do not provide query suggestions in the search box. Query Suggestions : Provide query suggestions in the search box.
hi browser.search.suggest.enabled is set to false I have closed firefox and restarted computer, but still I get the list displayed. appreciate your help paul
Do you mean the Google search bar on the Navigation Toolbar or the search bar on the (Firefox) Google website (www.google.com/firefox)?
hi using firefox if i type www.google.co.uk it comes up with google page. The search box is in the one in the middle of the page. As soon as I start to type in it i then get 10 suggestions thanks
On the Google page, click "Search Settings" in the upper right corner; on the settings page, scroll to the bottom and tick "Do not provide query suggestions..." in the "Query Suggestions" area, then click "Save Preferences', and be sure to not delete the cookie that Google sets.
Thanks, I had done this but failed to notice that it was not accepting cookies in the exception list (options privacy exceptions) even though the tick box said accept cookies. This seems to have cured the issue. Many thanks for all the replies and your patience it is very much appreciated Paul
