solved Firefox crashes explorer.exe in Windows 7

Issue

I have another kind of problem with Firefox

Description

With Firefox installed my explorer.exe will crash at random times. Just sitting there, opening a folder, or right clicking will cause my explorer.exe to crash and restart. I uninstall Firefox and I am problem free. This happens without Firefox even open, just installed. Also, the options of "This Happened" does not include 5+ times every day.

This happened

A few times a week

Four Months Ago

Extensions installed

No-Script

User Agent

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0)

Current versions of Firefox should work with Windows 7 ( ref. ) but the next version of Firefox (Firefox 3.6) will have better integration with Windows 7.

This happens without Firefox even open, just installed.

Sounds very suspicious that just having Firefox installed, without opening it, would crash Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). This page links to a list of current Windows 7 Mozilla bugs but nothing there remotely matches what you report.

There is nothing I can suggest except to visit a Windows forum to see if you can find out what may have caused the explorer.exe crashes, for example,
Windows 7 User Interface forum at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproui/threads
Windows 7 forum at http://aumha.net/

Hi,
I would like to just add that I have begun having the same problem. I installed Win7 last thursday and have been problem free up until today where it seems opening firefox crashers exlorer.exe and restarts my PC.
I think it first happened when I tried to uninstall the Skype Add-on for firefox, which I didn't want.
Any tips would be welcome, but I don't really want to keep using Internet Explorer :-(

Steven and Matt B:
You can both post comments to http://quality.mozilla.org/projects/windows-7-firefox-testing with more detail, if you want to help with testing Firefox on Windows 7.

Matt B,
You said, I think it first happened when I tried to uninstall the Skype Add-on for firefox, which I didn't want. Skype was also mentioned by someone else on the windows-7-firefox-testing page linked above.
That extension causes multiple problems. You should be able to disable the Skype extension in Firefox via "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions" (the extension is not needed to use the Skype application). See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions#Skype_Extension_for_Firefox for details. If you can't even open Firefox normally, you should be able to open it using the "Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)" Start menu program shortcut and then disable or uninstall the Skype extension . See the Veilige modus article.

If you need more help, Matt, could you start a new thread? Steven says that explorer.exe is crashing even when Firefox is not open, so his problem is different.

Thanks Alice,
Yes it has started happening to me now without firefox open, it must just have been coincidental!
But I think the problem is driver related as I've been slowly updating all my hardware drivers now that I'm using Windows 7 and obviously one or some aren't compatibile properly yet. I system restored to before my last driver update (for an abit Airpace Wifi receiver) and so far I've had no crash. I only have a useless wireless card at the moment instead :-S.
I hope that's useful for Steven.

Thanks

Matt,
Thanks for posting back that your issue with Windows 7 and explorer.exe crashes must have been coincidental to having Firefox installed.

In case it helps, I found topics like this posted in Microsoft's Windows 7 forums:

Explorer.exe crashes repeatedly in Windows 7 RC

Explorer.exe crashes when I right-click items in start menu

I had this same problem in Vista and now in 7 I installed 3.5.3 in Vista and Windows explorer would randomly crash, and when right clicking Recycle bin or a file or just the desktop it would crash windows explorer. The same thing is happening in 7. It is very frustrating that I have to use 3.0.14 instead 3.5.3 because 3.5.3 is way faster. There has got to be someone out there who knows what the problem is. My Vista and 7 are 64 bit.

Just installed Firefox 3.6 Beta. 3 min later explorer.exe crashes. Went a week without Firefox and there were 0 crashes. Please fix this.

Here are some related forum topics I found that you can read through, in case it helps:

Firefox 3.5 crashes vista 64 windows explorer!!!!

Windows Explorer.exe APPCRASH (caused by third-party shell extension)

Thank you Alice. I have been all through those before and nothing helped.

I found this bugzilla report, marked "INVALID":
Bug 518412 - Firefox causes Windows Explorer to crash under Windows 7 RTM Ultimate x64 (read comment 3 from Matthias "matti" Versen 2009-09-23)

At this point I think you should post in a Windows forum and try their recommendations. For example, the solution reported in this microsoft.com Windows 7 forum topic (linked earlier) was to disable the "NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension" using the ShellExView tool. I also found this Windows 7 forum topic at sevenforums.com (linked in the bugzilla report), in case it helps: Windows Explorer crashing on right-click under x64 RTM

I have the same problem, without firefox my PC (Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) don't crash!

Please fix this bug :|

same here. i had to go back to previous a version of firefox, currently using 3.0.8 and no problems. Firefox 3.5 and above seem to crash explorer in Windows Vista 64 and Win 7 64.

Here is a topic in the Microsoft Windows 7 forums that specifically mentions Firefox 3.5 and links to related threads on this forum and MozillaZine. It may be helpful to read through the topic and to add your own comment.

Right-clicking in OS shell causes Explorer crash and restart

i have looked at the crash dumps and it seems that the explorer.exe crashes were caused by heap corruption. on a longshot i uninstalled firefox 3.5.3 and installed firefox 3.0.15 and no crashes. I did some further testing and it seems that the private browsing function in firefox 3.5.3 if left constantly on in the options->privacy menu it will cause the crashes. if you turn it off the crashes stop.

I installed 3.5.5 and did what eldgoat said and haven't had a problem with my windows explorer crashing yet. I'm not sure if it was something that 3.5.5 addressed or if eldgoat's suggestion is actually working, but thank you eldgoat. It seems there finally is a solution.
