Reunion.com aka mylife.com keeps hijacking my browser

I do a lot of general genealogy and family history searches. Occasionally I browse in error through a link which redirects to either Reunion.com or Mylife.com. Each and every time I hit these sites, a subscription window comes up that prevents my browser from leaving the site. Long ago I learned not to click in the "image" area of such a subscription window; I am forced at these times to exit the browser through the control panel, clean the cache with an outside software, and (sometimes) reboot the computer to get to the "well, this is embarrassing" window, which then allows me to dump the hijack.

There has GOT to be a better way to report suspicious, hijacking sites. Can Mozilla provide a "hot" button for this? I am still using an XP computer but have the latest version of Mozilla Firefox on board, and generally the blockers work well.

You can block the site yourself with the "Adblock Plus" (ADP) extension with your own filters

 ||mylife.com^
 ||reunion.com^

Neither site is blocked by the subscription filters "EasyList US" or "Fanboys". Adblock Plus will do nothing without filters and a subscription or two is easily added after installing ADP. The extension is large but well worth having on your main or only Firefox profile. I don't think either site comes close to being a hijacking.

A nice feature of Adblock Plus filters is that each subscription, and your own additions are maintained separately. Another is that you can bring up a "blockable items" report to see what can be blocked as well as what is blocked, and you can see the specific filter that is blocking an item.

You can use an extension such as "WOT" to warn you of a bad site, it is based on user experience and often just what people seem to think a site is about based on the name. The extension will block access to bad sites, but you can override the warning. I don't put much stock in their ratings but do use the extension because "McAfee Site Advisior" no longer works well with Firefox.

"McAfee Site SiteAdivisor" system is better it is based on analysis of site tracking with virtual machines, every link to see what happens. Both WOT and SiteAdvisor place warning symbols on Google search results, but as I said SiteAdvisor is not working well with Firefox, and their extension is not on addons.mozilla.com so the code is not subject to review by Mozilla. You can however get a site report

Firefox has a reporting system for reporting Web Forgeries (Phishing) under the HELP menu, which does not apply to either site. ADP has a reporting mechanism in their options to report sites so they will be blocked, but unless you can identify a specific portion that is bad, I doubt that they would add a filter as reunion.com is used by a lot of people.

Known attack sites can be blocked here, uses information reported to Firefox and to Google.
[x] Warn me when sites try to install add-ons
[x] Block reported attack sites
[x] Block reported web forgeries

Having a good hosts file on your system can protect your entire system cross-application and all browsers and all your Firefox profiles against a lot malware. Neither of the sites you mention are attack sites or have a bad reputation for extreme annoyances frequented by a lot of people. See links below.

Yee ha! Already had Adblock Plus installed (something I swear by) and, once I found the right pull-down menu, it was a breeze to do. Thanks muchly. It's great to learn the power of add-ons you already have; guess it pays to explore occasionally!

If you firefox homepage is hijacked by reunion.com or mylife.com there are a couple ways to fix this very annoying problem. Fix #1 is to Start-Run for firefox.exe -ProfileManager and delete your profile. The downside of this approach is that all your bookmarks and other settings get deleted too. Fix #2 is Start-AllPrograms-Accessories-CommandPrompt and type these commands (make sure there is a space between application and data).

 cd application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles  (enter key)
 dir (enter key and note the odd name of the most recent profile)
 cd oddname.profile (enter key)
 erase sessionstore.js  (enter key)
 exit (enter key and back to desktop)

With the second approach your bookmarks and other setting are not deleted. Hope this works for you. -- Mike Gallets
