I just updated to 4.o RC1. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate OS. Every time I open multiple tabs, FF crashes. Very frustrating. Any ideas? If not, is there a way to roll back to Beta release 12? This never happened with that version.

Surely I'm not the only one this is happening too. Something else I forgot to add - I noticed this happening shortly after I was prompted to upgrade the Adobe Flash 10 plugin. Is anyone else having this frustrating issue? I'm going to uninstall/reinstall the plugin and see what happens.

If I can't figure out or get some help fixing this, I'll be forced to use Internet Explorer and I REALLY REALLY don't want to do that. Any assistance or useful suggestions are appreciated.

I uninstalled the Adobe Flash Plugin with no luck. It's still crashing when opening multiple tabs. I'm getting ready to reinstall it. I just wanted to see if that was the cause and it doesn't appear to be.

Is there any way to roll back to 4.12b?

No luck uninstalling/reinstalling. Doesn't appear that the plug in is the cause. Very frustrating! As of this post, 11 other people are having this issue. Does anyone from Mozilla ever look at these threads and offer assistance or is it all user based? I know these things take time, but no one is stepping up to offer ideas on what's happening or how to fix.

I'm now forced to use IE (yuk) because Firefox is unstable. HELP!

Hi edmeister, thanks for responding. I apologized if I seemed impatient or rude in my previous post. As you can imagine, I am just frustrated.

I ran the 'about:crashes' as you suggested, but despite their being over 50 links on the crash page, none of them has a date/time stamp as being AFTER I installed RC1. For example, I downloaded RC1 on 3/10, but despite having at least 20 or so crashes since then, the most recent crash report is dated 3/6. There are no crash reports dated on or after 3/10.

I going to go ahead and post the most recent one, just to see if that may be any indicator. This occurred on 3/6. Just so you're aware, the crashes are becoming more frequent now. It used to only happen when opening multiple tabs, but that's not even the cause any more. It's happening with single windows/tabs open now. When it crashes, it gives me no other options but to close. No information concerning the error or link to additional details. It just closes abruptly. Then, when re-opening, all the saved tabs are gone. This doesn't happen when I'm able to close it on my own.

What I've done so far is uninstall/reinstall the flash plugin driver and I've cleared the cache (but not cookies or history). Thanks for your assistance.

Try turning off your shockwave plugin, It helped me, however i can't watch movies on youtube and etc. I was trying to reinstal it, and now i ended up again with my firefox crashing all the time.

That's exactly what happened to me. I uninstalled plugin, then tested FF without it and the problem still occurred. Then I reinstalled it and now it crashes ALL of the time. It doesn't even have to have multiple tabs opened, like what started out happening. It will crash if a single tab is opened. It sucks!

I appreciate your response, but I watch youtube vids all so to me, that's not really a solution if you don't have full functionality from the browser.

Just for kicks, how do you 'turn off' or disable the SWF plugin without uninstalling it?

"I appreciate your response, but I watch youtube vids all so to me, that's not really a solution if you don't have full functionality from the browser. " Me also, but It's still better than nothing.

"Just for kicks, how do you 'turn off' or disable the SWF plugin without uninstalling it?" To do that, go to tools, addons, plugins, you can turn it off there.

No such luck. I disabled the flash plug in and the issue is still occurring. I'm so aggravated. Any other suggestions? Thanks to Redorianin for his assistance.

Whenever i have this crash, the file responsible for it is ntdll.dll. It's a file located somewhere in your windows folder. I also heard that only disabling plugins and/or addons helps. Just try disabling them one by one, until you find the one that causes the crash.

Good idea. I'll give the add-on suggestion a try.

As for ntll.dll, is that a critical windows file? Can I make a copy of it and rename it without affecting the operating system?

BTW, is this strictly a users forum? Does anyone from Mozilla ever try to assist in resolving these issues? I realize it's a miniscule number compared to total users, but 20 other people are having this same issue, which seems to suggest a bug in the browser code or how it interacts with an approved plug-in. It seems like it's a common enough problem that a developer or engineer should take a closer look at.

By saying this, I mean no disrepect to you folks that are trying to help. I appreciate your suggestions and assistance.

"As for ntll.dll, is that a critical windows file? Can I make a copy of it and rename it without affecting the operating system? " No, I don't remember any more why, but you shouldn't do that (sounds risky, doesn't it? :P).

Check the link below regarding removing the ntll.dll, file it is NOT advisable

fatpat,

The crash report you linked screams Adobe Flash! If you are getting crashes with Flash disabled or removed, how about providing a later crash report from the time Firefox crashed with Flash removed or disabled. Each crash report has a date & time of submission on the about:crashes page. If Flash isn't working when Firefox crashes, something else is causing Firefox to crash, in addition to Flash.

IMO, there's a problem with Shockwave Flash 10.2 r152 based upon my "gut" after seeing so many postings about crashes after last week's Flash update on other browsers, too. Not just with Firefox. My advice is to revert to 10.1 r102 and see if that solved the Flash that are definitely caused by Flash. I have had no crashes at all with Firefox 4.0RC or 3.6.15 at all, and didn't update Flash last week when 10.2 r152 was released - I always wait a week or two to see if problems like this develop after a plugin is updated.

Thanks edmeister. I tend to agree with you, but the evidence doesn't support it. Let me recap what I've done so far.

I uninstalled the 10.2r152 plug in, then rebooted. I was able to recreate the problem without the plugin installed at all. It still crashed. I reinstalled 10.2r152. I then disabled every single plugin I have. No luck. It still crashes when I start pinning tabs.

I then uninstalled 10.2r152 a 2nd time, then rebooted. Afterwards, I rolled back to 10.1.102.64, rebooted, and I am STILL crashing.

When running about:crashes, the earliest entry in my list is dated March 4th. Despite numerous crashes since then, none of those are showing up. In fact, I cleared the entire list, so I could see everything that's happened from this point going forward. However, not only have no new reports been posted, all of the ones I previously cleared are back.

Something weird is obviously happening, but I have yet been able to pinpoint. I have ZERO problems with the previous version of 4.o (beta 12), nor am I experiencing this issue with my other browsers.

I appreciate everyone's continued efforts helping me resolve this. Thanj

Did you try to remove addons like Yahoo toolbar, norton toolbar (these are not plugins, but addons, or am I wrong)?

more options

Did you already tried a clean reinstall with a full remove of the current version and a new profile?

  • Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
  • Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
  • Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

more options

Not yet, but I absolutely will. I'm at my wits end.

Ok, I've had it. I've done everything except format my hard drive and reloading everything trying to resolve this issue. I tried cor-el's suggestion above, even delete my personal data and I'm STILL having the problem.

Then I tried uninstalling and rolling back to a previous version and I'm STILL having the problem. So, I uninstalled Flash for the umpteenth time and reverted to a previous version to use with my rollback version of Firefox and it's STILL crashing.

At this point, I figure I'd try to run in Firefox's safe mode. I won't be able to watch video, but at least I can surf the web for a few hours. Wrong. It STILL crashes even in safe mode.

I'm beyond frustrated. No one should have to work this hard to make their browser work. FF has been my favorite browser since it was released, but I'm forced to go with IE, Chrome, or Safari. They may be slower, but at least they're stable and they work.

I'm still open to any suggestions. Maybe I'll take a day off and try again later.

If the crashes only occur with the latest Flash player 10.2 r152 installed then you can try the previous Flash 10.1 r 102 version.

You can try to uninstall Flash and install the previous Flash 10.1 r102 version to see if that works.
