[In KB - Needs Review] How do I upgrade my graphics drivers?

  1. Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

For the Firefox 4 release, cww proposed this article.

As it is a solution and not a problem, I think it is an how-to article. It should be linked to other troubleshooting articles as Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix and Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) that are the main effects of using out-of-date graphics drivers.

I also propose a new name: How do I upgrade my graphics driver?

For Windows, we can use the one for Google Chrome (about:gpu needs to be replaced by about:support): http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=1202946&topic=21606

    For Mac OS X: http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=36254

    For Linux: http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/graphics/updatelinux.html

  2. So, is this a proposal by Cww? Someone already created a draft: /kb/updating-your-graphics-drivers/re.../11482

(scoobidiver) It should be linked to other troubleshooting articles as Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix and Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) that are the main effects of using out-of-date graphics drivers.

scoobi, can you point to some bug reports or other references on the hangs and crashes caused by outdated graphics drivers? I don't see it mentioned in Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix or Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) but I do see updating your graphics drivers given as a solution in Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems (in the new "Turn off hardware acceleration" section) and in Flash videos won't play full screen.

The issue in the Google Chrome article you linked is "Outdated graphics card drivers can cause web graphics, including 3D content, and videos to run slowly or not at all." and it also refers to WebGL and hardware-accelerated 3D graphics.

Does proposing this new article mainly have to do with hardware acceleration in Firefox 4? If so, another option might be a new "What is hardware acceleration?" article, with a section on updating your graphics driver. We could link to it from the Options window - Advanced panel General tab "Browsing" section, which currently says this for Fx4:

    • Use hardware acceleration when available: Firefox can use your computer's graphics processor to display some pages with video and animation. This makes Firefox faster since your computer's graphics processor is much better than your computer's main processor at displaying these types of things. This box is checked by default but the feature isn't available for all graphics processors. Firefox will enable it when possible. Read more about hardware acceleration.
So, is this a proposal by '''Cww'''? The issue in the [http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=1202946&topic=21606 Google Chrome article] you linked is "Outdated graphics card drivers can cause web graphics, including 3D content, and videos to run slowly or not at all." and it also refers to WebGL and hardware-accelerated 3D graphics. 3. This is only about Firefox 4. I think basically, there are cases where you have a supported graphics card (for hardware acceleration and webgl) but you have various issues because your drivers need to be updated.

I did some more looking and found:

    Quote:
Mozilla has urged users to update their graphics cards' drivers if they want to take advantage of Firefox 4's hardware acceleration.

Last Friday, Benoit Jacob, who works on Mozilla's platform engineering team, spelled out why users should verify that their computers, especially PCs powered by Windows, have the latest graphics drivers.

Firefox 4 brings many new features in the Graphics department, notably hardware acceleration and WebGL. However, when we turned these features on by default in nightly builds around September last year, and then in Beta 7, crash statistics and bug reports quickly showed that bugs in graphics drivers were often making these features misbehave. We reacted by selectively disabling these new features on buggy drivers, based on the large amounts of information collected by beta testers. Of course, Firefox remains fully functional: only these new features get disabled.

As I read it, then, the main reason you should update graphics drivers is because outdated or "buggy" drivers could be blocking hardware acceleration in Firefox 4.

  6. The "about:support" (Help -> Troubleshooting Info) section on Graphics should also be included in an article about HW acceleration & graphics driver updates:

There is no notification that your graphics hardware has been blacklisted, and the blacklist doesn't take effect until you restart Firefox. Once Firefox has completed a blocklist ping, you can restart Firefox and look at the graphics section in about:support. You should see a) Direct2D and DirectWrite turned off; b) "Blocked on your hardware due to unresolved driver issues" or something to that effect; and c) 0 hardware accelerated windows. ...

I rewrote it based on bjacob's edit. It needs review.
  8. The new revision starts off, after a short intro, with the section, How do I know my graphics driver is out-of-date?
...which explains how to open the Troubleshooting Information tab to check the Graphics section, to check the adapter description, the driver version and date..

I think that the first section should be "How can I check my graphics information?" since I'm assuming the purpose of the article is mainly to see if a graphics driver update is needed to enable HW acceleration and WebGL in Firefox 4 on Windows (Mac OS X 10.6 updates include the needed drivers; don't know about Linux).

I disagree with 3. If the driver date is older than three months, you have either an out-of-date graphics driver or a legacy graphics card.

See my post above. Driver Date 8-25-2010 ... which is the current video driver update offered by HP's updater service (I updated last month and there are no newer updates available). All is well at my end, HW acceleration is enabled and working. See also https://wiki.mozilla.org/Blocklisting/Blocked_Graphics_Drivers

I think that you should only suggest updating to the very latest driver version to fix problems such as hangs or crashes, which isn't the main purpose of this article from what I can tell.

  9. I am not sure about the Graphics section content on Mac OS X and Linux.

I'm assuming the purpose of the article is mainly to see if a graphics driver update is needed to enable HW acceleration and WebGL in Firefox 4

No. This troubleshooting article is only about updating graphics drivers even if HW acceleration is already enabled. It should be linked from Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems. HW acceleration is another topic that should be treated in a dedicated how-to article that is scheduled by Michael.

I disagree with 3. ... See my post above. Driver Date 8-25-2010 ... which is the current video driver update offered by HP's updater service

    For your HP computer:

    • 8.15.10.2202 is the latest customized driver version with HP's update tool
    • 8.15.10.2235 rev A is the latest customized driver version on HP's support site
    • 8.15.10.2291 is the latest generic driver version on Intel's support site.

So the 3 months delay is right for graphics card manufacturers. It is only OEMs that don't release often updates. I agree to extend the delay to 6 months for non-reactive OEMs.

All is well at my end, HW acceleration is enabled and working

The HW acceleration availability (and activation if the option is checked) does not mean that you won't have problem in specific websites. In the stated driver blocklist, only graphics drivers with known problems are referenced. The purpose of the downloaded blocklist (recent feature) is to fix problems once they've been discovered.

I am not sure about the Graphics section content on Mac OS X and Linux. 10. (scoobidiver)HW acceleration is another topic that should be treated in a dedicated how-to article that is scheduled by Michael.

I didn't know that Michael was planning a HW acceleration article. Where do you see that?

    (scoobidiver) This troubleshooting article...

I'm not at all clear about the purpose of this article. You said in your first post, I think it is an how-to article. It should be linked to other troubleshooting articles as Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix and Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) that are the main effects of using out-of-date graphics drivers.

Are hangs and crashes in Firefox due to outdated graphics drivers still occurring in Firefox 4 RC1? The references posted by me and Michael have to do with enabling hardware acceleration and WebGL in Firefox 4 by updating outdated graphics drivers, when these features are disabled because the outdated drivers would otherwise cause crashes and other problems.

I'll let someone else review your revision.

  11. @Alice

I'm not at all clear about the purpose of this article. You said in your first post, I think it is an how-to article.

I changed my mind. Indeed, I think it is an how-to article for graphics drivers but a troubleshooting article for Firefox.

The references posted by me and Michael have to do with enabling hardware acceleration and WebGL in Firefox 4 by updating outdated graphics drivers, when these features are disabled because the outdated drivers would otherwise cause crashes and other problems.

There are two reasons to update graphic drivers:

    • get HW acceleration available for very old graphics drivers (before June 2010 except for Intel where the date depends on the card)
    • fix some problems when HW acceleration is available for old graphics driver (after June 2010)

Note: For GPU manufacturers different from NVIDIA, ATI, Intel, HW acceleration is disabled by default but you can force-enabled (advanced users) and in that case, you need a recent graphics driver.

Are hangs and crashes in Firefox due to outdated graphics drivers still occurring in Firefox 4 RC1?

Yes, they might if the driver is old but not very old.

High volume crashes are monitored in crash stats but you can have driver crashes (crash in the driver code) with low volume or graphics crashes (crash in the Firefox graphics module) where the graphics driver correlations are not obvious.

For hangs, if users don't file a bug, Mozilla won't know there is a problem.

But not as a template, because:
