[In the KB] Using the QuickTime plugin with Firefox

  1. This thread will be moved soon to the support forum :)

Could you post a screenshot of the "QT toolbar with a black screen" you get when you attempt to play a QuickTime video?

It is an image type (see the contextual menu):

    https://support.allizom.org/fr/gallery/image/5821

... what do the Add-ons->Plugins list and about:plugins show, if anything, for QuickTime?

    AOM - QT section: https://support.allizom.org/fr/gallery/image/5822

    about:plugins - QT section: https://support.allizom.org/fr/gallery/image/5823

Do you have any other plugin installed that may be set to play embedded Quicktime files (.mov) such as possibly VLC Media Player?

Yes, VLC is associated to .qt and .mov and QT also. It is strange, I don't see the video/quicktime type in Options > Applications.

    about:plugins - VLC section: https://support.allizom.org/fr/gallery/image/5824

After disabling VLC, I can play QT videos!

    Thanks Alice.

Have you tried different Firefox profiles?

A new profile for the test.

    As a conclusion:

Thanks Alice. ''Have you tried different Firefox profiles? '' A new profile for the test. As a conclusion: * write a [[Using the VLC Media Player plugin with Firefox]] article (if VLC is enough popular). * add a VLC section and a file type interaction section in [[Video or audio does not play]]. * add a "Can not play QT videos" section in this article about possible interactions with other plugins that play the same file types.
  2. Hey, that's great. It was a good brain teaser  :-)

I finally remembered that plugins installed to the Firefox plugins folder take precedence over plugins outside that location. I also remembered that npvlc.dll can interfere with the old "npdsplay.dll" WMP plugin that Firefox uses from the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player folder on Windows XP. I don't use VLC myself on Windows but I took a guess that the VLC plugin could also interfere with QuickTime.

  3. I made some revisions based on my earlier comments, to the "Checking for QuickTime" "Configuring QuickTime" sections.

I know that there are other updates needed ("Troubleshooting" section, for when QuickTime videos don't play (conflicts with other plugins, namely VLC) but I think that this revision should be reviewed first, before additional revisions are made.

  4. I have a few questions/comments:

    • On Windows 7, I can open the Quicktime player and then Edit>Preferences>Browser and click the MIME Settings... button at the bottom of the window and I get a Windows control panel to "Set associations for a program." This looks to me like what you can do in Windows XP. Is that correct?
    • I don't understand why we can't tell people to use the Applications panel in the Firefox preferences to change MIME settings.
    • FWIW, I've never changed these settings on a Mac or PC and I've never had a problem playing any quicktime media. Can/should we tell people not to mess with this stuff unless they are having problems? Maybe configuring Quicktime should be part of a troubleshooting section.
    • All macs always have Quicktime installed. Someone can probably delete the player but Quicktime is part of the OS.

    • No - On Windows XP, you can set both file associations and reconfigure the browser plugin for embedded media. When you go to QuickTime Preferences ->Browser -> MIME settings on Windows XP and make changes, those changes are reflected in the number of QuickTime npqtplugin*.dll files and MIME types listed in about:plugins. Windows 7/Vista only lets you set file associations, which are associated with an application like WMP, VLC or the QuickTime Player. (I also went through this with scoobi - see page 1)
    • The Applications panel only s lets you set actions for directly-downloaded files, like a .mp3 file, not embedded content, such as an mp3 embedded in a webpage. Examples of mp3 file links and mp3 embedded content here: http://vll.csumb.edu/html/tech.html
    • It's more of a problem with sites having embedded audio. I don't know about current QuickTime versions on WinXP but in previous versions, the default QT MIME settings didn't have .mp3 or .wav audio set by default, and people were getting missing plugin alerts on sites with embedded audio even thought they already had QuickTime installed. You could change that section to "Troubleshooting embedded media" instead of "Configuring QuickTime.
    • I know that QuickTime is installed on all Macs. Not sure if it can be uninstalled but the plugin can be disabled in Firefox ... and then, the embedded mp3 example in my previous link won't work, but the direct download will ask to open in iTunes (or whatever application you have set for .mp3 downloads) in the QuickTime player, instead of being handled by the plugin. I don't know why the "Checking for QuickTime section was written that way .... maybe an "Enabling Quicktime" section would make more sense for Mac?

  5. I made some major changes to Use the QuickTime plugin to play audio and video based on the discussion here. Could someone review?

  6. I changed heading names (same as the Java article) and added Win7/Vista and XP sections.

  7. Thanks, scoobi.

I see you renamed my "Troubleshooting" section to "Handled media files" (which includes the old "Configuring QuickTime" section) but I made another revision and renamed it again, to "Changing how media is handled" (to include both embedded media and links to media files). I also renamed the "Embedded media files" subsection to "Embedded media", since I wanted to maintain the distinction between media embedded within a webpage and links to media files.

Anyway, I think the article is ready for approval.

  8. I approved it.

    I approved it.
  9. Thanks scoobi.

I made a small change to the note in the "Enabling..." section, then approved the revision.

Do you still want to add a "Troubleshooting" section on possible conflicts with the QuickTime plugin and the (optional?) plugin included with VLC media player? (Solution: disable the conflicting VLC plugin in the Add-ons -> Plugins list?)

Another option would be to add information about possible plugin conflicts to the Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems article.

  10. It is strange, I don't see the video/quicktime type in Options > Applications.

I forgot to answer before but, not all MIME types are shown in the Firefox Applications window. You used to be able to see all MIME types listed in the SeaMonkey 1.x Helper Applications window, but that's no longer the case (bug 462629, linked from MozillaZine's File types and download actions article).

The QuickTime video you tested with the embedded .mov file uses MIME type: video/quicktime ... which is listed as "QuickTime Movie" in the Firefox Applications list. The MIME type "video/quicktime" for "QuickTime Movie" only appears in the "Select Helper Application" window (applies to downloaded files only, not embedded content) that opens when you choose "Use other" in the Applications window. 11. (scoobidiver) I changed heading names (same as the Java article)

One of those changes was renaming the "Installing QuickTime" section to "Installing and updating QuickTime". I just noticed that section didn't have any info on updating QuickTime for Mac so I added it and approved my revision. (I used the same "Mac OS X Software Update feature" link as the Java article, since QuickTime is updated the same way.)
