Firefox crashes when loading certain pages
This article covers the situation where Firefox displays a message about crashing when you visit pages but may behave normally on other pages. This article may also apply if you find that Firefox is crashing when browsing the internet but no one site consistently causes Firefox to crash.
- If Firefox crashes as soon as you start it, see Firefox crashes when you open it.
- If you have trouble opening direct links to files to download (such as PDF files, EXE files, DOC files) see Firefox crashes when trying to download a file.
- If Firefox does not close or does not give you one of the above error messages and is not responsive when visiting certain pages, see Firefox hangs instead.
The crash message may look like one of the following:
- Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close
- Mozilla Crash Reporter

General cases
Not using the latest version of Firefox
Firefox updates are regularly released and a number of the fixes are crash related. One of the first, and easiest, things to check is to make sure you're using the latest release. See Firefoxin päivittäminen for details.
Problematic or out of date plugins
Plugins are programs that let Firefox display video and sound and do other things. If you find that certain, specific pages cause Firefox to crash every time you visit them, they may need a common plugin. Follow the steps at the Troubleshooting plugins article to determine whether a plugin is causing your problem.
The following plugins may cause crashes in some instances:
- ActiveX: Firefox does not provide ActiveX support and if you have an old ActiveX plugin installed, you may experience problems such as crashes as well as be subject to a significant security risk. See ActiveX for more information.
- Silverlight: Specific versions of Microsoft's Silverlight plugin can cause crashes on certain pages. You can disable this plugin in the Plugins tab of the Add-ons Manager to see if this addresses your issue.
See the Troubleshooting plugins article for specific instructions on how to disable or remove plugins and how to figure out which plugins may be causing your crash.
Problematic or out of date extensions or themes
Extensions and themes can often cause crashes and other errors. This is especially true if you recently installed or updated an extension. Follow the steps in the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article to determine whether an extension or theme is causing your problem. The following is a list of extensions known to cause Firefox crashes when triggered by certain pages or seemingly randomly; it should not be considered comprehensive:
- XPL LinkScanner
- RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin (installed with RealPlayer)
- ThinkVantage Password Manager (see the Thinkpad forums)
- AVG SafeSearch (see Firefox crashes due to old versions of AVG SafeSearch?)
- Customize Google (Can cause Firefox to crash when loading Gmail)
- Free Download Manager (Causes Firefox to crash on right-click)
See Uninstalling add-ons for help uninstalling or disabling these extensions.
Malware: viruses or spyware
A number of different viruses and spyware are known to crash Firefox. Ensure that your system is kept clean of spyware and viruses. For more information, see Is my Firefox problem a result of malware.
