Editing articles

The Firefox Support Knowledge Base is wiki, which means that you anyone can edit knowledge base articles. In order to ensure accuracy of information for users, edits from new contributors do have to go through an approval process.

Before you start editing

In order to edit pages in the Firefox Support Knowledge Base, you need to create a Firefox Support account. All you need is an email address. To register, see our Registration page.

  1. If you have an account, make sure you are logged in. To log in, click on the "Log In" link, in the top right corner.


  2. After you've entered your Firefox Support username and password, and logged in, click on the "My Account" link in the top right corner.


  3. On your User Preferences page, scroll down to the Preferences section, and make sure "Groups:" is set to "Contributors - people looking to help others."


  4. Scroll down, and click on Change Preferences.

You are now ready to start editing articles in the Firefox Support Knowledge Base.

Making edits

  1. Go to the knowledge base article you want to edit.
  2. In the Actions box, click on "Edit this page", to open the article in the page editor.


  3. At the top of the page editor, you will see a number of categories and checkboxes.


    • Categories:
      • Unless you are editing a Live Chat page, or editing page that is already in the testing area, always select Staging Area.
    • Checkboxes:
      • - This is a help article -: Check mark this if the article is a tutorial or reference chart. It presumes there are no current problems with Firefox, and the article helps the user learn more about using Firefox.
      • - This is a support/troubleshooting article -: Check mark this if the article is meant to help solve a problem the user is having.
      • Firefox 2: Check mark this if the article applies to Firefox 2 users.
      • Firefox 3.0: Check mark this if the article applies to Firefox 3.0 users.
      • Firefox 3.5: Check mark this if the article applies to Firefox 3.5 users.
      • Linked from in-product: Leave this checkbox alone.
  4. Edit the article content. Knowledge Base articles are written in tikiwiki code. To learn more about tikiwiki markup, click on the "wiki help" link, underneath the 'Preview' button, or view our markup chart.


  5. There are a number of items below the article content area:


    • Describe the changes you made: Put a short summary of the edit you have made.
    • Folksonomy Tags: Add, remove, or edit words that will help people find the article.
    • Upload picture: To add any images to the article, click Browse.... A file selector will open, allowing you to select the image file from your computer. After you have selected the image file in the file selector, and clicked Open, the file is ready to be uploaded. Click Upload to upload the image. A thumbnail of the image should appear in the Insert picture area. To insert a picture, click on the thumbnail, and the corresponding code will appear where the cursor is, in the article content area. For more information, see Adding screenshots.
    • Upload screencast: To add a screencast to the article, click Browse.... A file selector will open, allowing you to select the screencast file from your computer (Flash versions are mandatory. You can optionally upload an acompanying OGG version). After you have selected the screencast file in the file selector, and clicked Open, the file is ready to be uploaded. Click Upload to upload the screncast. A thumbnail should appear in the Insert Screencast area. To insert a screencast, click on the thumbnail, and the corresponding code will appear where the cursor is, in the article content area. For more information, see Adding screencasts.

Saving and previewing your edit

There are three buttons at the bottom of the editor:

  • Preview: Click this to preview the changes you have made.
  • Save: Click this to submit your edit. Your changes will appear in a staging copy of the Knowledge Base article, where a senior editor will review it, and apply the changes to the live version.
  • Cancel Edit: Click this to cancel your edit, and not save any of your changes.
