Sometime I can fix the problem by shutting down, sometime by reloading Firefox again...

Also very often it seems I cannot close Firefox because after I close it and start again...it gives me the impression that it is still running.

Please help.

Just guessing but maybe problems are partly down to trying to use a graphics & video heavy site on a computer that could be getting long in the tooth.

Is the problem only on certain sites ?

Try some of the following

■ disable any of firefox's unused add-ons.

■ disable use of JavaScript if you do not need the navigation or other features it provides on a specific troublesome site.

■ consider disabling FlashPlayer if you do not need the video on that site

■ shut down any background uneccessary Operating System etc tasks, eg.

  • hdd indexing
  • downloading
  • checking for and installing security updates
  • other programs/applications
  • Your Java Runtime Environment / Java Quick Start, it is often not needed, it is certainly not needed to run javascript in your firefox browser disable JQS

As for firefox running unexpectedly when it should be closed I am not sure what causes that. Malware may be one possibility, but there are probably more innocent explanations also. I have noted a few threads about firefox staying open and the process needing to be killed.

For example see https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/772783 "My pc tells me Firefox is still running - but I can't see it running. I have to shut down my pc and start re-boot WinXP" also q772763 and q770309 the latter also mentions how to kill processes in other OS & someone's alternative workaround. If you watch the other threads maybe answers will be seen.

Hi King,

■ I was wondering how frequent this problem is, does it happen on most site you visit or only some ?

■ Does it only seem to happen on certain sites, such as ones playing Videos ?

  • FlashPlayer and video use could often create quite a lot of work for some computers and things can then slow down, you are then more likely to get messages saying a script is busy.
  • Using Windows "Task Manager" shortcut keyboard keys Ctrl+Del+Esc (in XP ) ( Ctrl+Shift+Esc in some newer sytems) and use the performance tab to see how hard the cpu is working.

■ Probably if you use Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode the problem will stop, can you try that and confirm whether that is the case ?

  • when you get the first safe mode box showing do not initially change anything with the tick/check boxes; just use the option to continue in safe mode.

What we are trying to do is narrow down which sites cause problems and which add-ons may be implicated.

Hi John,

Task Manager says:

CPU usage = 100% PF usage = 1.00 GB

I do sometime think that it is a problem with my computer.

It is a Acer Aspire 3620 I bought when I was in Australia quite a while ago. I am surprise that it is still running.

Any thing I can do to ungrade it?? (I am no computer expert at all...I mainly use it to check mail and run Firefox.

Happy New Year!

Initial guess seems correct, your computer is due for retirement, or to be allocated lighter duties.

Acer Aspire 3620A quick web search suggests it may be a 1.5 GHz Celeron . I think initially some came with only ¼ GB RAM not sure what the max allowable is 1GB ? what have you got installed, however that is still low by modern standards even if 1GB.

You could consider increasing the amount of RAM, if you can, and have not already done so. But it is often more costly on older computers per GB than on newer ones, and it is probably not worth upgrading other than with second hand or free parts.

Possibly increasing the page file size would help, (if you have 1GB RAM installed already probably try a 2 GB page file) and ensuring you have at least 20-25% free space on the hdd. ■ Most tweeks are not straightforward, but making space on the disk drive could be, eg store photos videos etc on a flashdrive or a cd drive, and occasionally clear caches and temporary files.

■ The simplest options to reduce problems are stopping any unnecessary applications, downloads, or firefox extensions running.

  • If you do not need flash player ( because you are not viewing video ) on a site, disable FlashPlayer on menubar use:
  • Tools -> Addons -> Plugins -> Shockwave flash -> disable
  • reverse procedure but use enable to re-enable flashplayer

you will still get any alternative static information but will use less CPU power. ".I mainly use it to check mail and run Firefox. "When checking your email any video is probably advertisements. And on many sites you visit with firefox the video content may not be the primary content.
