How we are different

Thank you for getting involved with Firefox Support. In order to prevent any false assumptions or wasted work, the page will lay out some of the key differences between the Firefox Support knowledge base wiki and other wiki systems out there.

The Firefox Support website uses the SUMO open source support system, which is itself a Mozilla project, created to develop a product support management system. In addition, SUMO has its own developers working specifically on SUMO, with bugs tracked in Bugzilla.

So what are the key differences?

Wiki markup

The wiki markup you may be used on Mediawiki powered system is not the same as TikiWiki markup. For a chart that lists most TikiWiki markup and our own custom markup we have created a markup chart.

Staging system

Because support.mozilla.com is the official knowledge base, and it is a wiki, we need to be careful that users don't read incorrect information on the official Knowledge Base. So we have a staging area and review system for new contributors. Contributors deemed trustworthy, will be able to approve their own edits. For more information see Approving articles and edits.

Translations

There are no sub-directories in the Knowledge Base. All article names are in the same directory, which means that out of all articles in all languages, no two articles can have the same name. Instead, each article is assigned to a language. Articles that are translations of each other are attached together. For more information, see Translating articles.
