Creating a desktop shortcut to a web page

You can use Firefox to create a shortcut on your computer's desktop to a page you've visited. After creating the shortcut, if you open it with Firefox closed, your default browser will launch and load the page. If you open the shortcut with Firefox open, Firefox will open the page in a new tab.

Firefox 3:
  1. Resize the Firefox window so you can see both your computer's desktop and the Firefox window on the same screen.
  2. Click and hold the icon in the Site Identification Button.
  3. While still holding the mouse button down, move the pointer to the desktop, then release the mouse button. The shortcut will be created.
Firefox 2:
  1. Resize the Firefox window so you can see both your computer's desktop and the Firefox window on the same screen.
  2. Click and hold the icon in the Location bar (aka. favicon), which is just left of the URL of the page you're viewing.
  3. While still holding the mouse button down, move the pointer to the desktop, then release the mouse button. The shortcut will be created.

You can also drag and drop items to the desktop from the Bookmarks menu and the Bookmarks and History sidebar to create shortcuts.

In addition, there may be third-party Firefox extensions that can help you. Go to addons.mozilla.org to search for and install extensions for Firefox.
