This article describes how to clear single items or all items from the Location bar history.

Clearing all items for a single site

  1. At the top of the Firefox windowOn the menu bar, click on the History menu and select Show All History to open the Library window.
  2. At the top right corner, type the name of the website you wish to forget in the Search History field, and press EnterReturn.
  3. In the resulting list, right-clickhold down the Ctrl key while you click on the site you wish to forget, and select Forget About This Site.
    NOTE: Using Forget About This Site will all traces of that site from your History. For more information, see Clear Recent History.
  4. Close the Library window.

Clearing a single item from the Location bar history

  1. To clear a single item in the Location bar history, click the drop-down arrow in the Location bar.



  2. Press the Down arrow key, or move the mouse, to highlight the entry to delete.



  3. To clear the highlighted item, hold down the Shift key and press Delete on your keyboard.

The item is deleted.

Note: If you see items with a star, those are Bookmarks and not part of your browsing history. This is part of the Firefox Smart Location Bar feature. If you don't want bookmarks to appear in the Location bar, see Cannot clear Location bar history.

  1. To clear all Location bar history, click the Tools menu, and select Clear Private Data....
  2. In the Clear Private Data window, select Browsing History.
    • Note 1: Be sure to de-select any other private data that you do not want to be cleared. See Clearing Private Data for more information.
    • Note 2: If you have de-selected "Ask me before clearing private data" in the Private Data settings, you will not be prompted for what data to clear. See Configuring private data removal for more information.
  3. To clear all items in the Location bar history, press Clear Private Data Now.

The Location bar history is cleared.

  1. To clear all Location bar history, click the Tools menu, and select Clear Recent History....
  2. In the Clear Recent History window, set Time range to clear: to Everything.
  3. Beside Details, click on the arrow button, then select Browsing & Download History.
    • Note: Be sure to de-select any other items that you do not want to be cleared. See Clear Recent History for more information.

  4. To clear all items in the Location bar history, press Clear Now.

The Location bar history is cleared.

Troubleshooting

I still see items with a star in the Location bar

This happens because the Smart Location Bar feature in Firefox 3 includes bookmarks as well as places you have visited. To turn off display of pages you have not visited in the Smart Location Bar, install the Hide Unvisited add-on.
