When you bookmark a page in Firefox 3, you have the option of adding "tags" to the bookmark. These tags are used to help better categorize bookmarks so you can find them in both your menu and when searching.
When you Bookmark a new page, you will be presented with the Page Bookmarked or Edit This Bookmark window. For methods on how to add a new bookmark, see How to bookmark a page.
The Tags field lets you enter a list of tags you want associated with the new bookmark. When using more than one tag, use a comma to separate them.
For example, let's say you bookmark the page http://www.amazon.com. You might want to tag that bookmark with shopping, books, and gifts.
You can also add tags you have previously used, by clicking on the down arrow next to the Tags field. Put a check mark next to each tag you want to add to the bookmark.
If you want to add or change tags for an existing bookmark, you can do so in one of two ways.
To change tags using the bookmark star:
To change tags using the Library window:
Tags are most useful when used with the Smart Location Bar feature. When you type something into the Location bar, the autocomplete results will include items that match tags. For example, if you've tagged http://www.amazon.com with shopping; books; and gifts, you can type all or part of each tag name. The Location bar will include the tagged bookmarks in its autocomplete results.
For more information, see the Smart Location Bar article.
You can use tags to put one bookmark into multiple virtual folders. To access your tags in the Library:
You can add tags to bookmarks so they will show up in search results that you save as Smart Folder. For example, if you want to make a smart bookmark folder for "shopping" sites, you could bookmark and tag http://store.mozilla.org/ with shopping so it will show in the Smart Folder search results even though the Mozilla Store doesn't have "shopping" in its web address or page title. For more information, see the Smart Bookmarks Folders article.
