Tags in the new forums

  1. As you may have noticed, the new forums has tags that you can use to filter questions by. These are set by the ask a question form right now but we'll be adding additional tags in the future.

These are the existing tags and what they mean:

    • desktop: Firefox 3.6 or earlier on Desktops/Laptops/Netbooks
    • beta: Firefox 4 betas on Desktops/Laptops/Netbooks
    • mobile: Firefox on Mobile (Android or Maemo systems)
    • FxHome: Firefox Home App for iPhone/iPad
    • sync: Firefox Sync
    • iphone: iPhone setup questions
    • websites: problems with websites
    • crash: crashes (obviously)
    • data: bookmarks & history (dataloss)
    • addon: add-on related questions
    • learning: don't know how to use Firefox
    • ui: problem with the UI (mainly for beta and mobile where we're making UI changes)
    • general: general questions
    • Tags for specific (and major) Firefox versions (so both Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 3.6.8 are tags)
    • Tags for operating systems: e.g. Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.6

If you want to focus on crashes or a specific OS, just click on the tag in the field view to narrow by that category. If you want to narrow it further, just edit the URL and add a second tag (we'll add UI for this soon). You need to convert spaces to dashes and remove any periods. For example:

    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions?tagged=firefox-36,mac-os-x-106 or https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions?tagged=desktop,crash

If you're a forum moderator, you should be able to add or remove these tags from individual questions now. We'll be setting up in a week or so a group for non-moderators to also be able to do this. We don't want any logged in user to be able to assign tags but it shouldn't be a privilege limited to Forum moderators either.

As for creating new tags, I'd like a focus group of a few members of the community to help decide on some good tags to have for the most common issues (webdev? facebook? hotmail? firewall?) I think a lexicon of about 30-40 well-chosen tags would work well. That way questions can be easily sorted and we can quickly find specific ones again, but it's not overwhelming for contributors who are answering questions to go ahead and add a tag or two. Let me know in this thread if you want to take part.

    Thanks

  3. Hey, great list of tags, Cheng.

    A few comments:

    • Aren't Fxhome and iPhone synonymous? I'd use only one tag.
    • Can we change the tag "learning" to "how-to"?
    • the UI tag is not clear to me, isn't that a subset of "learning/how-to"?

And can we make tags hierarchycal? It seems that if I search for 3.6 questions, I want to see all of them from 3.6.1 to 3.6.8

  4. No, FxHome and iPhone are not synonymous. One is about setting up on the iPhone and one is about FxHome in general (including issues with syncing to it and other specifics.)

We can't change tags easily, I can add a "how-to" tag and then we'll need contributors to go through and manually change all the currently tagged "learning" objects to "how-to".

UI applies only to the beta/mobile -- There are a lot of UI differences between Firefox 3.6 and beta/mobile and I wanted an easy way to pull out people who were confused/concerned/had problems with these UI changes so we would know what to document as we move into the documentation phase of this project.

No, hierarchical tags were not in spec and are a lot harder to implement. Maybe in the future. We can bookmark all the common usecases though (I need some syntax from James for that)
