I would just like to know if DNS SRV is supported in firefox 2 or in anyone is working on bringing this feature into the web browser.

I would be able to put in http://host.example.com and it would go to http://host.example.com:8080 because of a dns SRV record.

See Bug 14328.

Please add support for DNS SRV records so the web can be more reliable. Thank you.

Supporting DNS SRV in browsers would be in my understanding a great progress.
I had a discussion on this with William Stacey of Microsoft back in 2004.

If you are interested, you can have look at:
- the discussion thread started at:
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Win2000/microsoft.public.win2000.dns/2004-02/0066.html
- a later mail after which the dialogue stopped:

Cheers.

Please implement DNS SRV queries!

First) Companies are finding themselves in need of this service. SRV queries are the natural way of solving the "Domain Controller" problem (DCs competing for the domain name, therefore making it impossible for websites to implement an http://MyDomain.com as opposed to http://www.MyDomain.com".

Second) SRV resolution provides the means to Sys Admins to implement a simple http load balancing scheme.

Third) SRV queries provide an elegant solution to the http://MyDomain.com problem as opposed to having to implement the ugly kludge of enabling IIS in every single DC and redirecting it to your website.

Please, be the hero of the decade (the RFC for _http._tcp has been around since 2002) and implement SRV queries.

Sincerely,

Alan Angulo

Please, implement querrying of DNS-SRV records r.s.n. ....

Yep. I think it would be a great and affordable way to implement a backup http server for my websites (I'm a small webhosting company).

By giving the client (firefox) the choices and the rules for how to pick (i.e. if host1 is down, use host2). We don't have to dynamically change DNS for backup (and load balancing), which saves the internet from very short TTL's.

i agree, please implement SRV records! It's been over 10 years since bug 14328!

I 27th that request.
