I never see that I am able to use the X button to have a site stop loading

Issue
I have another kind of problem with Firefox
Description
I sometimes have trouble loading particular applications on Facebook, or they're taking too long - I'd like to back out of the request using the X button (next to the reload/refresh button) but I've never seen it usable yet (always blacked out) - have I not set it up correctly?
This happened
Every time Firefox opened
I've never been able to use this X button
Extensions installed
I'm using 3.5.4. Extensions: AI Roboform Toolbar, Google Toolbar, Myibay Firefox Extension, PPC Web Spy Toolbar, TrendMicro Toolbar
